About the client

Logo of iPaper iPaper is a Danish software company that develops e-commerce solutions for retailers and brands. Its approach is built on a deep understanding of customer psychology, buying behavior, and the shopping journey. By combining these insights with advanced technology, iPaper helps businesses recreate the best aspects of in-store shopping within digital commerce experiences.

To support this approach, the company developed the Store Metaphor—a framework that translates the principles of physical retail into online stores.

Goal

The main goal was to explain the Store Metaphor in a way that would be easy for prospects and customers to understand.

Our task was to transform complex methodology into a compelling visual story that could explain the framework in less than two minutes while making it memorable, engaging, and easy to apply.

Challenges

The biggest challenge was making an invisible customer journey visible.

Unlike a physical store, online shopping consists of interfaces, screens, and interactions that are much harder to explain visually. Simply showing website pages would not help viewers understand the psychology behind the methodology. We solved this by structuring the story around four customer journey stages.

Our approach

Business immersion

Image showing 3D video for iPaper featuring an animated character riding a shopping cart through a city, representing the retail customer journeyBefore developing the creative concept, we studied the client’s business model, target audience, and the customer psychology behind the Store Metaphor. This research established a strong strategic foundation and ensured the narrative accurately reflected iPaper’s methodology rather than simply describing its features.

Storytelling-first strategy

Instead of explaining the framework through diagrams or interface walkthroughs, we used storytelling as the primary learning mechanism. By drawing parallels between familiar in-store experiences and their online equivalents, we made an abstract concept intuitive, engaging, and easy to remember.

Iterative validation

This iterative workflow minimized production risks, streamlined feedback cycles, and ensured every scene contributed to explaining the Store Metaphor clearly.

Project Breakdown

Phase 1.

Business discovery and concept development

The project began with an in-depth analysis of the client’s business, audience, and the Store Metaphor methodology. We developed the creative concept, defining how the story would communicate complex ideas through clear visual metaphors.

Phase 2.

Scriptwriting

With the concept established, we wrote a script that transformed the Store Metaphor into a concise, engaging narrative. The storyline was structured to guide viewers through each stage of the customer journey in less than two minutes.

Phase 3.

Storyboarding

We translated the script into a detailed storyboard, planning every shot, transition, and scene. This stage established the visual flow, pacing, and storytelling before production began.

Phase 4.

Concept art

Our artists designed the project’s visual language by creating the characters and approximately six unique environments. These concepts defined the look and feel of the animation and ensured visual consistency throughout the project.

Phase 5

Pre-production validation

To validate the creative direction before full production, we developed a color script and a 2D animation.

Phase 6.

3D production

Modeled the characters and environments before moving into 3D motion design and character animation. The resulting 3D animatic finalized all movements, camera work, and timings.

Phase 7.

Voice-over and revisions

We recorded the professional voice-over and synchronized it with the visuals.

Phase 8.

Rendering and post-production

The final stage included applying materials and textures, refining shading and lighting across every scene, rendering the final frames, and compositing all visual elements into the finished video.
