Localizing and updating technical e-learning courses with AI

Industry:
energy
Technology:
AI avatars, Articulate Storyline
Scope:
485 lessons (120+ learning hours), 8 languages/variants

Goal

The client needed to update and localize a large portfolio of technical training content focused on electric vehicles, battery systems, and renewable energy. The original learning materials included 485 lessons combining live-action videos with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and Learnify-based interactive slides.

Project objectives included:

  • Localizing roughly half of all courses into German, French (France), Spanish (Spain), Romanian, Polish, Slovakian, and US English;
  • Migrating the entire course portfolio from Learnify to Articulate Storyline;
  • Updating existing content based on Instructional Designers (IDs) input.

Challenges

  • Aggressive timelines: Some deliverables required localizing 70+ hours of content into four languages in under two months.
  • Budget constraints: The client was looking for innovative AI-driven solutions to avoid the high costs of traditional video production and to streamline future course updates.
  • High translation accuracy: With no client-side review capacity in the target languages, the localized content had to be end-learner ready.
  • Technical complexity: Content involved specialized engineering terminology and compliance standards.

What we did

To meet the client’s ambitious goals, we built a custom workflow combining AI-driven media production with ISO-compliant localization processes.

  1. AI-driven content recreation

    We replaced live-action SME videos with AI-generated synthetic presenters using Synthesia, allowing faster production and easier future updates. Simultaneously, all modules were migrated to Articulate Storyline. The layouts in both tools were adjusted for localization-readiness.
  2. Content update loop

    We replaced live-action SME videos with AI-generated synthetic presenters using Synthesia, allowing faster production and easier future updates. Simultaneously, all modules were migrated to Articulate Storyline. The layouts in both tools were adjusted for localization-readiness.

    We introduced a flexible update loop to incorporate ID-requested updates mid-project without derailing production timelines.

  3. Specialized linguistic teams

    For each language, we assembled dedicated teams of:

    • Two to three certified technical translators with engineering backgrounds;
    • One senior editor with an engineering background;
    • One native SME (often a Ph.D. from a local university).

    We followed ISO 17100:2015 highest standards, covering full-cycle translation, editing, SME review, and QA before production. Our team created specialized glossaries and style-guides for each of 7 new languages/variants. One of the language variants was US English, where we not only adapted linguistic nuances but also converted all measurements to imperial units.

    Additionally, linguistic teams worked in close sync with our production and QA staff to ensure localization precision and technical accuracy.

  4. Scalable media production workflow

    Our production team localized interactive slides and synthetic videos including on-screen text, graphics, and AI-generated voiceovers (VO). We processed content in batches to handle large volumes efficiently. During the process, each module went through multiple QA rounds:

    • Linguistic content QA – Ensuring all texts, graphics, and UI elements matched the approved translations;
    • Linguistic VO QA – Adjusting AI-generated VO for correct pronunciation;
    • Multiple rounds of functional QA – Testing interactivity, navigation, and responsiveness;
    • Packaging QA – Verifying naming conventions, correct storage, and file delivery.

    In total, 40+ team members contributed to content localization, production, and quality assurance.

Project highlights

  • 485 lessons (~120 hours of content) updated and localized in stages;
  • 8 language variants managed across multiple content batches;
  • AI-based video creation with synthetic avatars streamlined both production and future updates;
  • Full migration from Learnify to Articulate Storyline, with localization-ready templates;
  • ISO 17100:2015-compliant process with SMEs involved;
  • SCORM-compliant packages delivered to the client, with an end-learner-ready guarantee;
  • No client-side revisions needed post-delivery, thanks to our layered QA process;
  • All deliverables were completed on time and budget, even under extreme timeline constraints.
