About the client

The United Nations Population Fund (or UNFPA, formerly the United Nations Fund for Population Activities) is an international development agency that facilitates and supports reproductive health for women worldwide.

Goal

  • Develop a comprehensive course on a sensitive topic for diverse learners;
  • Design customizable learning paths based on a mandatory pre-test;
  • Encourage participants to independently identify healthy and unhealthy relationship dynamics.

Challenges

  • Design content that accommodates diverse relationship dynamics while ensuring consistent learning objectives;
  • Engage voluntary participants with practical insights and actionable advice to encourage course completion;
  • Address the sensitive and personal nature of healthy relationships.

What we did

Personalized learning paths

Developed a pre-test to determine each participant’s unique course journey, ensuring a customized and efficient learning experience;

Custom program

Tailored content to adapt to individual needs, providing relevant and engaging material for each learner;

Expert-driven design

Integrated research-based insights and expert consultations to create a practical, results-driven learning experience;

Post-assessment

Designed a comprehensive post-course test to evaluate knowledge retention and measure learning outcomes.

Project breakdown

  1. Introductory test
    We had to implement more complex mechanics into the introductory test to account for the variety of experiences and relationships among users.
  2. Course structure
    We designed three-course paths to align with the introductory assessment on the following topics: healthy relationships, toxic relationships, and domestic violence.
  3. Learning content
    Our subject-matter experts initially developed the course content, which was then modified iteratively to suit the learning level of the target audience.
  4. Training materials
    Subject experts in psychology applied a theoretical background to writing the content that would go into the course.
  5. Outcome assessment
    The outcome test was a simple questionnaire based on the learning materials, which determined whether the learner understood the information presented.
  6. Design style
    Using Storyline, we integrated custom interactive elements and designed slides for both desktop and mobile devices. The graphic designer created a style guide to optimize costs, enabling the Storyline developer to produce aligned slides independently and streamline production.
  7. Interactive elements
    Articulate Storyline has limited animation functions, so we animated lines first in After Effects and then inserted GIFs in the Storyline.
  8. Accessibility
    We structured slide elements for proper screen reader representation, used high-contrast colors, and added audio descriptions to images to support visually impaired learners.
  9. User testing and content review
    We thoroughly reviewed all 12 learning paths to ensure proper functionality, accurate display, and clear, understandable content.

Results

The Blue Carrot team delivered a high-quality, visually engaging course tailored to a specific target audience. Comprising 3 chapters and 12 personalized learning paths, the course can be completed in approximately 4.5 hours. It features 220 slides, 40 interactive elements, and 86 animated assets. The final assessment includes 30 adaptive questions to evaluate learning outcomes.
